Fishermen's Bod

"In the evening after a meal on fish tusk and chickens we walked out to the fishermen's huts on the opposite side of the little inlet of Ham. Of the numerous fishing lodges that I had entered in different parts of Shetland, none equalled these for comfort and convenience. The huts, which would barely hold six people, were partly sunk in the ground, I suppose to prevent their being overturned by the violence of the wind. In the centre, of course, was the fire, and around were arranged couches of green turf, soft and pleasant, whereon the tired fishermen reposed at night, and sat during the day when not employed at sea."

From:   Journal of an Expedition to Shetland in June, July and August 1834. by Edward Charlton.
